Towards Fair Sharing of Block Storage in a Multi-tenant Cloud

چکیده
A common problem with disk-based cloud storage services is that performance can vary greatly and become highly unpredictable in a multi-tenant environment. A fundamental reason is the interference between workloads co-located on the same physical disk. We observe that different IO patterns interfere with each other significantly, which makes the performance of different types of workloads unpredictable when they are executed concurrently. Unpredictability implies that users may not get a fair share of the system resources from the cloud services they are using. At the same time, replication is commonly used in cloud storage for high reliability. Connecting these two facts, we propose a cloud storage system designed to minimize workload interference without increasing storage costs or sacrificing the overall system throughput. Our design leverages log-structured disk layout, chain replication and a workload-based replica selection strategy to minimize interference, striking a balance between performance and fairness. Our initial results suggest that this approach is a promising way to improve the performance and predictability of cloud storage.

Performance Isolation and Fairness for Multi-Tenant Cloud Storage
Shared storage services enjoy wide adoption in commercial clouds. But most systems today provide weak performance isolation and fairness between tenants, if at all. Misbehaving or high-demand tenants can overload the shared service and disrupt other well-behaved tenants, leading to unpredictable performance and violating SLAs. This paper presents Pisces, a system for achieving datacenter-wide p...
متن کاملAn Efficient Secret Sharing-based Storage System for Cloud-based Internet of Things
Internet of things (IoTs) is the newfound information architecture based on the internet that develops interactions between objects and services in a secure and reliable environment. As the availability of many smart devices rises, secure and scalable mass storage systems for aggregate data is required in IoTs applications. In this paper, we propose a new method for storing aggregate data in Io...
متن کاملMDE Opportunities in Multi-Tenant Cloud Applications
Cloud computing promotes economies of scale by sharing software and hardware resources across multiple tenants. To date, there has been relatively little research on how MDE can best support multi-tenant cloud applications, where there is a need to separate the logic and data of multiple tenants. In this position paper, we sketch out five key research opportunities for applying MDE to multi-ten...
متن کاملSecure Deduplication Scheme for Cloud Storage
Nowadays, the explosive growth of digital contents continues to rise the demand for new storage and network capacities, along with an increasing need for more cost effective use of storage and network bandwidth for data transfer. As such, the use of remote storage systems is gaining an expanding interest, namely the cloud storage based services, since it provides cost efficient architectures. T...
متن کاملPerformance Interference of Multi-tenant, Big Data Frameworks in Resource Constrained Private Clouds
In this paper, we investigate and characterize the behavior of “big” and “fast” data analysis frameworks, in multitenant, shared settings for which computing resources (CPU and memory) are limited. Such settings and frameworks are frequently employed in both public and private cloud deployments. Resource constraints stem from both physical limitations (private clouds) and what the user is willi...
